High School Staff
Amy Rangel has her Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Child Development. She worked at Children’s Medical Center for 11 years as a Child Life Specialist. She also teaches at Brookhaven Community College in the Child Development/Teacher Preparation Department. She has been at Vanguard since 2015.
Beth Trout has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with 11 years of classroom experience. The past 8 years at Vanguard, teaching high school science and math. She enjoys the daily challenge of bringing deeper understanding to students. She is the proud Mom of a 2013 Vanguard graduate.
Harry Dyas has a Bachelors of Science from Texas Tech University, where he majored in Sociology. Harry gained extensive experience while working for charter behavioral hospitals as a drug and alcohol youth counselor. Through a friend he then found his way to Vanguard where he has continued to work the youth for the past 19 years.
Jeremy Phillips primarily teaches college-prep English and Government in the high school, and is the National Honor Society advisor and our new robotics team coach. He attended Vanguard for middle school (1997-2000) before going to public high school and then the University of Texas, where he earned a BA degree in Linguistics. After he returned to Dallas, Vanguard welcomed him back as a teacher in 2012.
Stephanie has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with over 20 years of experience working with children that have learning and emotional differences. Stephanie has worked in a locked therapeutic facility in Missouri, for youth offenders and Our Friend’s Place, a therapeutic group home for girls in Dallas. Stephanie teaches English and Sign Language. She is the Entrepreneurial Program team lead.
Veronica Nelson has a bachelors of science degree from Grambling State University, where she majored in speech and language pathology with a minor in special education. Her first experience in teaching came in high school while volunteering for C-Bac now called The Arc in Shreveport, Louisiana where she found her passion for working with the special needs population. In college she worked at Paul E Slayton Preschool in Ruston, Louisiana where she gained experience in the classroom and working with students with special needs. After graduation, moving to Texas to embark on her career with the PISD structured teaching program in August 1998.
