What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.

The cornerstone of Vanguard ‘s therapeutic program is our emphasis on social and emotional learning. We recognize that for many of our students social skills and self-regulations are concepts that must be taught. While students may be book smart, they will not be successful in life without these relational skills.

SEL skills are taught in twice weekly therapy groups, led by staff therapists. These groups focus on self-discovery, values clarification, interpersonal relationships, community service and leadership skills. Students learn to express emotions appropriately, to problem solve and cope with everyday challenges. Groups are supported throughout the day by teachers through modeling, coaching and direct intervention.

As part of the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning, our program is guided by the latest research in this field. Our program also includes: Social Thinking Curriculum by Michelle Garcia, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Play therapy, CBT Therapy Behavior Therapy, Neurotherapies, Parent Education, Home support, Individual Therapy and Outdoor Programs.
