Vanguard Family Map
The new mapping tool for Vanguard families is available today. Check out the map here and find families to connect with that live near you!
The Robotics team started preparing this week for the annual BEST Robotics event, which is themed “Outbreak – Adjusting to the Threat”. The design, build, and programming will all take place at the school but the actual competition will take place online. The team will be judged performing multiple time trials with their robot on the “field” set up in rec room. These activities will be streamed for judges/referees on the day of competition. We are excited to see what our team will create and how they will perform!
The Houses of Vanguard
Your students and teachers are doing a great job racing to success. We have about 4 more weeks before the 1st quarter winner is announced (on 11/2). Below are the standings as of 9/18/2020:
- West/Orange – 1,060 points
- East/Red – 1,380 points
- South/Purple – 1,670 points
- North/Blue – 1,794 points
So far, things have been neck and neck between South and North but there is still time for anyone to jump in the lead!
Families, please remind your students to wear their house shirt on Fridays. Easy points are earned by wearing house shirts! Since house shirts have now arrived, students needs to wear these rather than just their House color to earn points. If your student still needs a shirt, please request a t-shirt order form Lauren Campos at email@example.com.

The PSAT will be administered to college-prep sophomores and juniors on Wednesday, October 14th beginning at 9:00 a.m. Please contact Julie Dyer at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to confirm your student’s participation for the PSAT.

Parent Education Classes
We strongly encourage parents and caregivers to join our monthly parent education classes to learn about the social emotional concepts and language your child is learning at school. All classes are led by Kevin Goodnight via Zoom and scheduled for Tuesday/Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm. Invitations will be sent out the week prior.
Our upcoming class, scheduled for Tuesday, October 20th, is titled Building a Solid Foundation: Safe Relationships and Emotional Awareness. Healthy relationships promote emotional regulation and prosocial behavior. Years of research shows that one healthy, safe relationship with an adult can change the trajectory of a child’s path in life. Safe relationships are the foundation upon which we build the five pillars of social-emotional learning. We will discuss the framework of safe relationships and how emotional awareness impacts our relationships.

Wellness class in the Middle and High School and group in the Lower School is in full swing and students are learning a lot about themselves this year. The focus has been on increasing students’ Self-Awareness. Self-Awareness is defined as the ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior and the ability to accurately assess one’s strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”
We began with a focus on Awareness of Emotions. Students learned where emotions come from and how to observe and describe how they feel in their body. Students also discussed primary and secondary emotions, what happens to our body and mind during emotions, and ultimately, how we respond when we have an emotion. Students also completed a Healthy Coping Plan to help them deal with their emotions in a healthy, expected way. Please talk with your student about their Healthy Coping Plan and ask them to help you create your own!
In the coming weeks, we will continue our focus on Self-Awareness and students will learn more about who they are. Accurate Self-Perception is the next focus in Wellness classes and groups. Students will be learning about personal traits they possess, will gain an understanding of their learning and conflict styles, and will learn how their personal qualities contribute to family and community. As we conclude the unit on Self Awareness, we will focus on identifying strengths and supports and the importance of personal responsibility. Please reach out to your student’s counselor if you have questions about the topics in Wellness class or groups.
