Erin Edwards
Graduation Year: 2018
Post-Graduation Activities:
I went to Texas Woman’s University for a year, majoring in psychology. I figured out that the university life was not for me, and I transferred to Brookhaven Community college to finish my associate degree. I started an internship at Vanguard working with one of the therapists for a year and then completed my Registered Behavior Technician training. I began working at the Vanguard Center for Neurological Health in 2020. In 2022, I took a job at Barkin’ Creek Dog Kitchen and Bath. It is closer to home, and I am working fewer hours to allow me to go back to school and finish the last few credits of my associate degree. I still plan on majoring in psychology.
What was your favorite thing about Vanguard?
My favorite thing about Vanguard is the supportive environment and how the staff and students help create a positive peer environment.
How did Vanguard help prepare you for life after graduation?
Vanguard helped me maintain life skills such as coping strategies, expressing difficult emotions in a healthy way and communicating effectively during conflicts. Vanguard not only prepared me for post-graduation but continues to be a place where I seek support and advice.
Do you have any significant Vanguard memories you would like to share?
There are too many to name. Vanguard is a unique place and I have many fond memories. The most significant memories I have are the annual New Mexico trips that middle and high school students get to participate in.
Were there any teachers or staff members that made a special impact on you?
All the teachers are amazing and really care for each student. They really work hard to make a connection to everyone. The teachers who had the most impact on me were Becky Hodnett, Beth Trout, Jeremy Philips and Martha Sharrock.
Is there any advice you would give to current or future Vanguard students?
I promise, sometimes the methods seem maddening, but trust the process – there is a method to the madness. The staff are all truly there to help you.
