Academics

Vanguard’s curriculum is a developmental learning model and operates on a mastery level philosophy. As soon as students master one instructional objective, they are moved to the next. Academic objectives are aligned with Texas Education Agency’s standards and are taught using experiential, multi-sensory, cross-curricular and differentiated instructional techniques. All reading, math and language instruction is tailored to the needs of the individual. Science/social studies provide additional experiential, hands-on, functional and “real life” instruction. Students learn to work independently, in large and small group settings.

Vanguard’s high school students follow one of two tracks: College Preparatory Program or Work/Study Program. In the college preparatory program, students may take college classes at Brookhaven Community College beginning their Junior year or take on-line classes at Texas Tech. Students in the work/study program operate several businesses including: coffee shop, snack shack, car wash, sewing and two lunch programs. Students in the work study program learn concepts including budgeting, inventory, staffing and customer service.
